When in 1915 (1st March) Budapest’s first scheduled public bus line opened on the Andrássy Avenue. The bus’s speed – 10-15/km – doesn’t look so impressive nowadays but at that time it was like magic, and for a couple of pennies anybody could enjoy the thrill of the automobiles. During the First World War the development held back, but in the 1920s this sector started to boom. Test buses arrived from Western Europe and the bus lines of Budapest began to cover the whole downtown. Finally in the 1930s the unified blue-silver look was created. Based on the Mercedes-Benz license the self-propelled chassis were made in the MÁVAG Factory, while they built the rest of the structure in private body shops. In the 1940s thanks the UHRI Factory cooperating with other industrial companies the local bus manufacturer kingdom was born. This brand was well known and recognized everywhere: the Ikarus.
The Ikarus 620/630 family belonged to Budapest’s regular scenery for almost 20 years. There was a time when the Budapest Pubic Transportation Company had 2/3 of its bus fleet made up of these types. With the rumbling Csepel diesel engine and the massive structure they survived everything so it’s no coincidence that the Budapest Tourism Office had one made for sightseeing in special cabriole version. In 1961 the sightseeing bus were proudly presented at the Budapest Industrial Fair and one year later it was operating with tourist on board on the streets of Budapest. Later on two more buses were made. Thousands of foreign and Hungarian tourists enjoyed the wonderful sightseeing with these unique buses in Budapest. Unfortunately in 1975 the three cabriole buses were disposed and none of them survived.
The Ikarus Cabriole Lives On
The MB Travel is committed to quality and we’ve been saying since the beginning, that the experience of travelling is a memory for life. And there’s nothing like travelling with old-timer (especially Hungarian made) vehicles! Nothing proves this philosophy better than the fact that we didn’t spare time and effort to find and purchase an old Ikarus 630 and based on thorough research after a long renovation period the bus was reborn – seats 36 people and it’s unique worldwide – the legend of the Ikarus Cabriole lives on. We paid attention to every little detail: the nostalgic colors, the authentic Csepel diesel engine, even the boarding is the same as in 1962. In addition the conditions are modern, the retro red seats are comfortable and the sound system is great.
